Our Story
Big Nose Productions is a community theatre company rooted in Penang, with a strong focus on nurturing local talent and enriching the performing arts scene. Founded in 2013 by Fazrul Abdul Kareem and managed by Producer/Director Fa Abdul, we have steadily grown into a prominent name within our community.
We spent our first five years immersing ourself in the vibrant theatre landscape of Kuala Lumpur. With the experience gained, we returned to Penang in 2017 with a renewed mission: to elevate the local performing arts scene by staging diverse productions and providing training and opportunities to Penang-based talents. Through this, we aim to showcase Penang's rich talent pool on larger stages across Malaysia, especially in Kuala Lumpur.
Our Shows
All our productions carry the same four characteristics:
Originality
Everything we produce for the stage is original material. We do not use existing scripts that have been performed elsewhere. Each show is completely created by us, for our audience.
Imagination
It goes without saying that a theatre company is creative by definition. We take that one giant step further by operating based the value of imagination. Producing good quality theatre takes extraordinary imagination and great storytelling. We do this by bringing together different talents and expertise, celebrating them, and providing a safe space to create.
Transformation
We have encountered audience members who told us that our shows always give them something to ponder, enriching them and sometimes, help them in their own lives. While we’re in the business of entertainment, we want to go one step further. We want to provoke and inspire our community with our stories and messages, for the betterment of us, together.
Community
We strive to serve our community and our nation. We make every effort to reach out to groups passionate about arts and support them as best as we can. This includes giving free guidance and advises to drama teachers from public schools and offering affordable ticket prices based on projects.
Artistic Endeavours
Since 2013, we have staged a wide variety of performances, including children's theatre, monologue series, comedies, and thought-provoking dramas. We have also made significant efforts to provide a platform for emerging artists to work alongside seasoned professionals, thereby fostering a collaborative and enriching environment for all involved.
In 2016, Big Nose Productions' "Shakespeare Goes Bollywood" was honoured with the prestigious Boh Cameronian Arts Award as one of the best productions of the year, solidifying the company's reputation for innovative and impactful theatre.
Shakespeare Goes Bollywood was a large-scale project involving higher budget, complex set design / special effects and experienced cast and crew. Having proven our ability to stage such a massive production, we bring forward our knowledge and experience, and continue our work within the community, in various lower-scale productions. This allows us to produce more shows, thus creating opportunities to work with more fresh talents.
